Japan

All my resources and thoughts put together before visiting Japan"

All I'm learning about Japan

Not sure why, I'm just into it. There's the pop culture aspect, I watch a lot of Anime. There's my strange obsession with Tokyo, I love how it's laid out. Either way, I keep learning, and want to share what I've found.
Also learning how much I actually misspell when typing.

Locations

Places I definitely want to visit if the chance comes up.

Learning Japanese

I've been using apps to help me learn to speak Japanese. MochiKanji is helping me learn my the alphabets. Anki, with the Japanese Like A Breeze deck, is helping me with listening comprehension. Umi is just good all around, sort of a combination of Anki and MochiKanji. Finally, I'm "sometimes" using the Pimsleur app, it's a lot of work but helps with pronunciation. Ah, and cannot forget Toucan. It's an extension that swaps out words on websites as you browse, forcing you to confront the word contextually. It's annying AND helpful.

Anime

Honestly, it all starts with Cowboy Bebop. Other than that, watching a lot of cartoons on Crunchy Roll these days. Not sure if I have a favorite really. I'll try to keep the anime list here limited to Japanese.

Food and Drink

  • Izakayas:

Bars are too much, both loud and large. Also, I don't always want the full experience of a restaurant. Izakayas fit securely in that happy eating and drinking place for me. It's weird to think, these places are all about sharing and getting to know people. Maybe I won't like it, since I don't like sharing food?
    Japan Eat

  • Other Options

Tabelog: A great option for finding places and making reservations. Not available in the USA. Also, cannot find an android version yet.

Shopping

Got a couple things going for me here. Japan has a certain level of Tax Free purchases for tourists. Need to figure that out. Gotta get that pop culture swag, and some watches! Some can even be Tax Free!

Malls / Shōtengais / Neighborhoods

Watches

There's a lot going on here. Will move this section to it's own pages at /misc/watches

Planning A Trip

We've got dates! At least, we have a goal. Middle of October next year!

Google Maps

I've pinned SOOOO many places on Google Maps so far. It's at the point where some of my pins are getting outdated.
